Resident Electoral Commissioner in charge of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Akwa Ibom State has pocketed money that was meant to pay the youth corps members who worked as adhoc staff in the last presidential and governorship elections in the state; Global Concord gathered.
The paper also gathered that the REC allegedly did this in connivance with the State Director or NYSC in Akwa Ibom State.
Despite entreaties from a cross section or the affected corps member to both the REC and State Director or NYSC, the money is yet to be released. The paper learnt that the REC and the state Director of NYSC denied responsibilities for non-payment of the affected corps members.
A staff of INEC who pleaded anonymity told Global Concord that “the State REC deliberately refuses to pay the corps members their election allowance”, adding that “he is mindless and does not even consider the risk the young Nigerians took during the election”.
In two different letters dated 12th May, 2015 sent to both INEC and the State Director or NYSC, the affected corps members urge the State INEC REC and state Director of NYSC to “use their good offices to look into this matter and give them adequate consideration”.
