Ahead of the 2019 General Elections, while Governor Udom Emmanuel’s relationship with most of his core supporters is becoming sore which has resulted to the gale of defection witnessed in the state lately, President Muhammadu Buhari has continued to warm himself into the hearts of Akwa Ibomites by spoiling both his supporters and non-supporters with juicy appointment.
While most supporters and foot soldiers of Governor Udom Emmanuel have continued to lament the governor’s preference of working with those they tag “Lagos returnees”, President Buhari has chosen a different approach which is wooing more faithful of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state to the All Progressive Congress, APC, the party holding sway at the national.
To add to earlier appointments graciously handed Akwa Ibom sons and daughters, President Muhammadu Buhari last week approved the reconstitution of boards of 19 parastatal agencies under Federal Ministry of Education and courteously favoured a former member of the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly and PDP card carrying member, Dr. Ekaette Ebong Okon as chairman of the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration.
To convince of the love he has for Akwa Ibom State, the President stated that the appointment was not just a short term one but that it will run for a period of four years.
Exhibiting rare political goodwill, President Buhari noted that he was not a kind of politician that sacrifice quality on the altar of politics but that he took into cognizance provisions of the respective legislation with respect to composition, competence, credibility, integrity, federal character and geo-political spread.
The Boards, consisting of the Chairmen and Members, will be inaugurated on a date to be announced soon.
Reacting to the appointment, commendations have continued to trail the president for looking beyond party lines in running the country.
With the President expressed inclusiveness particularly extended to Akwa Ibom, thousands of aggrieved PDP members who regretted that they have been used and dumped by the present administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel have vowed to move to the APC where the leader is sensitive of the plight of his followers.
Recall that in Uyo and Ikot Ekpene respectively, hundreds of former PDP members have defected to the ruling All progressive Congress even as more have vowed to follow suit in the coming days.
Meanwhile, while the gale of defection is intensifying, the ruling PDP in the state has failed to learned its lesson as was the case in early 2013 and 2014, claiming that the defection was a mere scam. Though aggrieved members say they were unmoved and were watching to see who will lose come 2019.
